The Oluf Mechalson, a documented vessel, has been added to the Granite Island "fleet" and will make its way starting in the morning May 30, 2001 from Marinette, Wisconsin to Marquette, Michigan and Granite Island. It will overnight at Beaver Island, Detour, Whitefish Point, Grand Marais and finally arrive in Marquette. Piloted by the vessels' partner, Frank M. Smith, it will travel through Lake Michigan, the St. Mary's River, and the Soo Locks before crossing the South Shore of Lake Superior.

Built in 1946 at Marinette Marine, the Oluf is named after one of the Great Lakes pioneer commercial fishermen, the son of whom had it built. It is steel hulled and capable of breaking early ice. It was fitted with a new steel hull, finished interior and new diesel engine in 1984. Click 'Next Slide' to see other photos of it.
